Dr. Mathieu Albert obtained his Ph.D. (1999) in sociology of science from the Department of Sociology at Université de Montréal.
Dr. Albert's dissertation focused on the evolution of scientific knowledge production in the social sciences since the 1970s. More specifically, he investigated to what extent the pressure to increase the socio-economic usefulness of academic research has led scholars to intensify their productions which attempt to respond to socioeconomic needs.
Dr. Albert also completed a post-doct at the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur la science et la technologie. His current research projects include the study of scientific knowledge production in health research as well as in the field of Medical education research. The goal of his project on health research is to understand the dynamics of competition between the three broad sectors of the health domain (biomedical research, clinical research, and social sciences) to define a "legitimate" conception of scientific research. The goal of his project on Medical education research is to analyze the current debate within the domain regarding the forms that research should take and the roles it should play. Dr. Albert's work also focuses on the political dimension of knowledge production. Dr. Albert is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Scientist at the Wilson Centre.
