Qualitative Research: An Introduction
The Wilson Centre
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
October 22-25, 2012

Qualitative Research: An Introduction

The Wilson Centre is proud to present a “Qualitative Research Atelier”, a four-day intensive program in
qualitative education research.

The seemingly enigmatic world of qualitative research can leave many researchers with little idea of where to begin. Atelier Wilson Centre is proud to continue its support of qualitative research in health professions education by offering a Qualitative Research: An introduction. The Wilson Centre has one of the largest concentrations in the world of qualitative researchers in the health professions education research field. Our qualitative researchers represent diverse theoretical, disciplinary and methodological perspectives.

Participants will gain a basic understanding of qualitative research principles, methodologies and applications.

Parameters of the Workshop

This workshop will focus on guiding participants through the challenges of conducting qualitative studies in the health professions education domain. From a basic understanding of the founding philosophies and traditions to introductory data collection and analysis, participants will be learning the foundations necessary to begin the development of a qualitative research program.

This program is designed for both:
• Researchers from education research centres and programs who want an introduction to qualitative
research practice.
• Individuals from the broad medical education research community with little experience in doing
qualitative research and who wish to formally learn about the paradigm.

Goal

Develop an understanding of, and skills in, qualitative research design and implementation in health professions education.

Objectives

1. Participants will be exposed to some of the premises and theories that underpin qualitative research.
2. Participants will develop an understanding of 3-4 methodological approaches to qualitative research.
3. Participants will build skills in qualitative data collection and analysis.
